The fencing a Cumberland County property needs depends on what it grows or keeps. Vegetable and field-crop farms along Route 77 and Route 49 in Upper Deerfield, Hopewell, Deerfield and Fairfield need deer exclusion and boundary fencing. Two site conditions shape how we build here. The county's sandy, well-drained loam is what makes it good vegetable ground, and it also means posts need a properly sized footing to stay plumb, because sand does not grip a post the way clay does. And the Delaware Bayshore side of the county, from Greenwich and Stow Creek down through Downe, Commercial and Maurice River, is open, wet and salt-exposed, which is where we recommend aluminum over steel and open-rail over solid panels.

Deer fencing for crop fields, orchards and nursery stock

Deer are the most expensive pest a Cumberland County grower deals with, and a fence is the only exclusion method that works every night without maintenance. The rule is height: white-tailed deer will clear a 6-foot fence and will not attempt an 8-foot one. That is why deer fence is a different product from farm fence.

Gates are the weak point of every deer fence. We size them for the equipment that actually uses the field, hang them on gate posts set heavier than the line posts, and run the wire tight to the ground or add a ground wire so deer and groundhogs cannot go under. Nursery, greenhouse and packing-house fencing

Cumberland County ranks first in New Jersey for nursery, greenhouse, floriculture and sod production, and a nursery yard has two fencing jobs: keep deer off the stock and keep the stock and equipment from walking off. Horse and ranch-rail fencing

Post-and-rail is the standard on Cumberland County horse properties because it is tall, visible and has nothing to catch a leg. Three rails at about 48 inches is the working minimum for a paddock; four rails at 54 to 60 inches for stallions, arenas and road-frontage lines. Treated southern yellow pine is the economical choice; western red cedar and Illusions vinyl post-and-rail cost more and need no painting. Where a paddock borders open Bayshore ground, the open-rail design is also the reason the fence is still standing after a nor'easter, because wind passes through it instead of loading it.

Which fence for which animal

• Horses: post-and-rail, or high-tensile with a visible top rail. Never barbed wire.
• Cattle: woven wire or 5-strand high-tensile on treated posts with braced corners.
• Goats and sheep: woven wire with 4-inch or smaller openings.
• Poultry and small stock: welded wire with a buried apron against foxes and raccoons.

Stormwater basin and retention pond fencing

Detention and retention basins are fenced when the municipal site-plan approval requires it; there is no single statewide fencing rule. The NJDEP stormwater management rules (N.J.A.C. 7:8) govern how basins are built and maintained, and the fence is a local safety condition written into the approval for a subdivision, a distribution center or a commercial site. Where required, the specification is almost always galvanized chain link with a locking gate wide enough for a mower, owned by the developer during construction and by the HOA or property owner afterward.
