That single requirement catches more Medford homeowners than anything else about the job, and it is the first thing we confirm before scheduling. The Township's Planning, Zoning and Code Enforcement office states that a zoning permit is required for installing a new fence or a replacement fence. That catches people out — homeowners often assume that swapping a failed fence for an identical one on the same line is exempt. It is not. Fence standards sit in the Township's zoning ordinance, and pool and spa barrier requirements are handled separately by the Construction office under the state Uniform Construction Code. The Borough's fence ordinance sets a general maximum of six feet. Within 25 feet of a dedicated street line, that drops to four feet, and at least half the area of the fence in that zone has to be open space, distributed evenly — so a solid privacy panel is not permitted near the street. The Borough also specifies that fences be installed with the posts facing the inside of the area being enclosed, meaning the finished side faces your neighbor and the street.
