Liberi Fence installs deer fencing for blueberry farms, horse and farm perimeter fencing, and salt-rated residential and commercial fencing across Atlantic County, NJ, from Hammonton and Mays Landing to Egg Harbor Township, Galloway and the shore islands. Atlantic County is two fencing markets in one county: the Pinelands farm belt around Hammonton, where deer pressure on blueberry fields is the problem, and the coastal strip from Brigantine to Longport, where salt air and nor'easter wind decide what a fence is made of. As a third-generation, family-owned fence company based in Turnersville, we install both, and we deliver the materials free within 200 miles if you would rather set the posts yourself.
Key Takeaways
- Blueberry and orchard deer fencing has to be 7.5 to 8 feet tall. White-tailed deer clear 6 feet, and a blueberry field is their preferred food from bud break through harvest.
- Shore properties get aluminum, vinyl or hot-dip galvanized chain link, never bare steel. Salt air within a mile or two of the ocean or bay corrodes steel fasteners and ornamental steel panels in a few seasons.
- Horse and farm perimeter fencing in Mays Landing, Hamilton Township and Buena Vista is 3- or 4-rail post-and-rail or high-tensile wire, priced by the linear foot, not the acre.
- Shore install season is compressed. Barrier-island towns restrict construction hours and access in summer, so the window for a Brigantine or Margate fence is fall through spring. Plan it now for a spring install.

Two fencing markets in one county
The inland half of Atlantic County is Pinelands farmland. Hammonton calls itself the Blueberry Capital of the World, and the farms around it, from Hammonton through Mullica, Buena Vista and Folsom, produce most of New Jersey's blueberry crop on sandy, acidic soil. Fencing there means deer exclusion on crop fields, boundary fencing on large parcels, and post-and-rail on horse properties in Hamilton Township and Mays Landing. Posts sit in sand, so footings need to be sized for a soil that does not grip.
The coastal half is a different job. Egg Harbor Township, Galloway, Absecon, Pleasantville, Northfield, Linwood and Somers Point sit on the mainland side of the bay, with steady salt air and open exposure on the marsh edge. Brigantine, Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate and Longport are barrier islands where every material choice is a corrosion decision, and where lot lines are tight, many properties are seasonal rentals, and the township limits when construction can happen in summer. We build differently for each, and the sections below say how.
Deer fencing for blueberry farms and orchards around Hammonton
Deer will strip new growth and fruit buds from a blueberry field, and no repellent works as reliably as a fence that is tall enough. The rule is 8 feet: white-tailed deer routinely clear 6 feet and will not attempt a properly built 8-foot barrier. A standard 4- or 5-foot farm fence does nothing for a blueberry field.
| Deer fence type | Height | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed-knot woven wire (high-tensile) | 8 ft | Permanent perimeters on blueberry blocks, orchards and nursery fields | Highest up-front cost; longest life; braced corners on every run |
| Polypropylene deer mesh on posts | 7.5–8 ft | Smaller blocks, U-pick fields, budget or seasonal exclusion | Lower cost; shorter life; needs a ground wire or it gets torn at the base |
| Welded wire, 6 ft, with 2-ft extension | 8 ft total | Packing yards and equipment lots that also need theft deterrence | Heavier and costlier than mesh; doubles as security fencing |
| Electric (multi-strand or baited) | Variable | Large acreage where a full 8-ft perimeter is not practical | Deterrent, not a barrier; needs a charger, grounding and regular checks |
Gates are where deer fences fail. We size them for the equipment that actually moves through the field, hang them on gate posts set heavier than the line posts, and run the wire tight to the ground or add a ground wire so deer and groundhogs cannot go under. On a qualifying commercial farm, deer fencing is a normal agricultural practice under New Jersey's Right to Farm Act and does not follow the residential height limit; Rutgers explains the eligibility rules in Fact Sheet FS1253. Properties that do not qualify follow the township fence ordinance instead, and we confirm which applies before we quote.
Horse and farm perimeter fencing in Mays Landing, Hamilton and Buena Vista
Post-and-rail is the standard on Atlantic County horse properties because it is tall, visible and has nothing to catch a leg. Three rails at about 48 inches is the working minimum for a paddock; four rails at 54 to 60 inches for stallions, arenas and road-frontage lines along Route 40 and Route 50. Treated southern yellow pine is the economical choice; western red cedar and Illusions vinyl post-and-rail cost more and need no painting. Farm perimeter fencing is priced by the linear foot plus corners, braces and gates: a square 5-acre parcel is about 1,870 feet of fence line, a 20-acre parcel about 3,730 feet, so the run length matters more than the acreage.
Which fence for which animal
- Horses: post-and-rail, or high-tensile with a visible top rail. Never barbed wire.
- Cattle: woven wire or 5-strand high-tensile on treated posts with braced corners.
- Goats and sheep: woven wire with 4-inch or smaller openings.
- Crop fields and blueberries: 7.5–8 ft deer fence, as above.
Salt-air fencing for the shore: Brigantine to Longport and the bayfront mainland
Within a mile or two of the ocean or the bay, the fence material decides the fence's lifespan. Salt air attacks bare and painted steel first: ornamental steel panels, steel screws and hinges, and light-gauge chain link all show rust in a few seasons. The three materials that hold up are powder-coated aluminum, vinyl, and hot-dip galvanized (or vinyl-coated) chain link with stainless or coated hardware.
| Material | Salt-air performance | Wind performance | Where it fits on the shore |
|---|---|---|---|
| Powder-coated aluminum | Does not rust; coating protects against pitting | Open pickets let wind through | Pool enclosures, front yards, decorative boundaries in Margate, Ventnor, Longport |
| Vinyl (Illusions) | Unaffected by salt; rinse to remove film | Solid privacy panels take full wind load; semi-privacy sheds more | Privacy between tight lots in Brigantine and Atlantic City; use semi-privacy or shorter runs on exposed corners |
| Hot-dip galvanized or vinyl-coated chain link | Good with coated hardware; bare light-gauge rusts | Wind passes through | Commercial lots, marinas, bayfront utility yards, dog runs |
| Wood (cedar or treated pine) | Cedar weathers well; fasteners must be stainless | Solid panels take full load; picket sheds it | Bayfront and mainland homes in Somers Point, Linwood, Northfield |
| Ornamental steel | Poor without constant maintenance | Open design | Not recommended within a mile of salt water |
Wind is the second design input. A nor'easter loads a solid 6-foot privacy panel like a sail, and on a barrier island there is nothing to break it. On exposed lots we recommend semi-privacy or picket profiles, shorter panel runs between posts, and posts set deeper than the inland standard. Pool fencing on the shore is almost always aluminum: it meets the 4-foot barrier height and gap rules, does not rust, and lets the yard breathe. The compressed season matters too: barrier-island towns restrict contractor hours and access from Memorial Day to Labor Day, so shore fences get installed fall through spring, and a spring install is quoted in winter.
Commercial fencing along the Black Horse Pike and Route 30 corridors
Atlantic County's commercial fencing runs along the Black Horse Pike through Egg Harbor Township and Pleasantville, Route 30 through Absecon and Galloway, and the Atlantic City Expressway interchanges at Hammonton and Egg Harbor. That work is galvanized chain link with privacy slats for contractor yards and equipment lots, cantilever and swing gates for warehouses and distribution buildings, dumpster and HVAC enclosures for retail, and stormwater basin fencing where a site-plan approval requires it. Commercial fence installation covers the full specification, including gate operators and keypad access.
Residential fencing in Egg Harbor Township, Galloway and Hammonton
Alongside the farm and shore work, we install privacy, picket, aluminum and chain link fencing and decks and railings on residential lots throughout the county. Egg Harbor Township and Galloway are the county's largest suburban markets, with subdivision lots, HOA architectural review in the planned communities, and pool-code fencing as the most common request. Hammonton's in-town lots mix Victorian-era homes with mid-century housing and the same sandy soil as the farms. In every case we locate the survey pins before the fence goes in, because an existing fence is not proof of a property line.
How an Atlantic County fence project works
- On-site estimate. We walk the line, measure the run, count corners and gates, and look at the soil, drainage and exposure. You get a written, itemized estimate. A survey is the only definitive property line; the NJ parcel map is a starting point.
- Permits and utility markout. Requirements are set by each of the county's 23 municipalities, and the shore towns add construction-season and access rules. Agricultural fencing on a qualifying commercial farm is usually treated differently from a residential fence. We call NJ One Call (811) before any post hole is dug.
- Materials. Installed by our crews, or delivered to you. In-stock materials typically deliver within 2–5 business days in South Jersey, and delivery is free within 200 miles.
- Installation and walkthrough. Posts set below the frost line in drained footing, wire tensioned or rails seated, gates hung and checked for swing. We walk the finished line with you before the job closes.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most effective fence to deter deer from blueberry bushes?
An 8-foot fixed-knot woven wire fence with braced corners and equipment gates hung on heavy posts. Deer clear 6 feet, so height is the whole answer; polypropylene mesh at 7.5 to 8 feet works for smaller blocks at lower cost. Repellents and short fences do not hold up through a Hammonton growing season.
What are the downsides of aluminum fences at the shore?
Aluminum is the material we recommend most on the shore because it does not rust, but it has limits: it is not a privacy fence, it dents if a vehicle or heavy object hits it, and powder coating can chip at cut edges if it is installed carelessly. For privacy on a barrier island, vinyl is the salt-proof choice; for a pool enclosure, aluminum is the standard.
What type of fence allows wind to pass through?
Any open profile: aluminum or steel pickets, post-and-rail, chain link, picket wood and semi-privacy vinyl. Solid privacy panels take the full wind load and are the fences that come down in a nor'easter on exposed lots. On the shore we recommend open or semi-privacy profiles on the windward side and deeper post footings.
Do I need a permit for a fence in Atlantic County NJ?
Each of the county's 23 municipalities sets its own fence ordinance, and the barrier-island towns add rules on construction season and street access. Agricultural fencing on a farm that qualifies under the NJ Right to Farm Act is often exempt from residential height and permit rules. We confirm the requirement with the township before quoting.
Can I buy the fence materials and install them myself?
Yes. We sell posts, rails, wire, mesh, panels and gate hardware for pickup or delivery, and delivery is free within 200 miles of Turnersville. In-stock items typically deliver in 2–5 business days in South Jersey; special orders take longer.

We recently hired Liberi Fence to install a new fence around our property, and while no project is ever without its hiccups, their team went above and beyond to make sure everything was done right. From the start, their communication was clear and professional. They helped us choose the right materials and design to suit both our needs and budget. During installation, a few unexpected issues came up (none of which were their fault), but what really impressed us was how they handled it. Instead of making excuses or cutting corners, they stepped up—offering smart solutions, keeping us informed every step of the way, and even putting in extra time to ensure the final result was flawless. The workmanship is top-notch—the fence looks fantastic and feels incredibly sturdy. But more than that, it's rare to find a company that shows this level of integrity, accountability, and customer care. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Liberi Fence to anyone looking for quality work from people who genuinely care about what they do. A+ experience!Posted on Google![]()
